Aditya Kumar

I build the backend of real-time products — sync servers, edit logs, rate limiters — and fix bugs in the open-source tools I use. Final-year Computer Science at BIT Mesra.

Featured project

CollabEdit — real-time documents, built from scratch

A Google Docs–style editor with live cursors, offline editing, version history, full-text search and link sharing. I wrote the sync server, storage and auth myself on FastAPI, Yjs/pycrdt, PostgreSQL and Redis, and run it on free-tier hosting.

CollabEdit: two people editing the same document. Rahul's caret and name appear live in Priya's window, with both avatars and All changes synced in the header.

Own CRDT sync server

FastAPI WebSockets speak the Yjs sync and awareness protocols over pycrdt (Rust Yrs): one room per open document, per-connection send queues, and roles enforced on every update. Edits reach other users in about 110 ms in production.

Edit log + compaction

Every edit lands in an append-only Postgres log, batched every 500 ms, then folds into snapshots under an advisory lock. Opening a 10,000-keystroke document went from 218 ms to 17 ms.

Self-built rate limiter

A token bucket in a single Redis Lua script: atomic across API instances, in one round trip, with fail-open or fail-closed per policy.

Careful sessions

Argon2id passwords, 15-minute JWTs, rotating refresh tokens with reuse detection, and one-time 30-second WebSocket tickets.

Offline-first

The browser keeps an IndexedDB copy of each document; edits made offline merge automatically when the connection comes back.

Tested and documented

173 API tests against real Postgres and Redis — including Hypothesis convergence properties — plus 79 web tests, and 10 architecture decision records.

Fixes in other people's code

I look for real bugs in tools I use, reduce them to a minimal reproduction, and fix them with regression tests. A few favourites:

microsoft/agent-framework #8660

is_type_compatible special-cased Any only as a target type, so workflow edge validation rejected executors declaring WorkflowContext[Any].

microsoft/agent-framework #8648

Middleware type detection failed under from __future__ import annotations; postponed (PEP 563) annotations are now resolved before dispatch.

libredb/libredb-studio #1121

One SELECT, AUTH or HELLO could silently move or re-authenticate the Redis connection shared by every later request; now refused at the provider boundary.

Other things I've built

WebChat

Real-time one-to-one chat with contact invites, blocking, read receipts, online presence and image messages.

  • Messages are persisted before the Socket.IO emit, so history and unread counts survive disconnects
  • Google sign-in that links to existing email accounts
  • Compound MongoDB indexes shaped to the conversation queries
  • React
  • Express
  • Socket.IO
  • MongoDB

Rehabilitation booking

Booking system for a rehabilitation centre: admins publish session slots, patients request them, admins approve.

  • No double-booking: a MongoDB transaction claims the slot with one conditional update — of 8 simultaneous requests, exactly one wins
  • Approvals run in transactions with an audit trail of who changed what
  • Rotating refresh tokens in HttpOnly cookies, role-based access, rate-limited sign-in
  • React 19
  • Express 5
  • MongoDB
  • shadcn/ui

Achievements

Competitions

  • 70th of 8,500+ teams — Amazon ML Challenge 2026
  • 1st place — Hatch From Scratch: AR indoor navigation app (Unity, Vuforia) with 95%+ accuracy
  • Global rank 3,433 of 28,000+ in a LeetCode weekly contest; peak rating 1605
  • 600+ DSA problems solved in C++ across competitive-programming platforms
